The government has today launched new digital number plates in Kenya that have security features to curb crime and prevent tax evasion. Some security features are visible to the naked eye, while others are only available to law enforcers.

New Digital Number Plates Kenya Launch Date
The new digital number plates were launched on 30th August 2022 at GSU Recce unit Headquarters in Ruiru, Nairobi by the then Interior CS Dr. Fred Matiangi.
Digital Number Plates Kenya Features
The new digital number plates will feature:
- A unique font
- A hologram
- A watermark
- Unique and different serial numbers for front and rear that are linked to the car chassis number
- a unique template
The hologram chip will hold among other things the car’s year of manufacture, type, and color.
New Digital Number Plates Kenya Benefits
The new digital number plates will assist in:
- Preventing crime through tracking of car number plates
- Assist the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) in collecting taxes by preventing tax evasion
New Digital Number Plates Kenya Costs
Changing from old number plates to the new digital number plates will cost KES 3,000 for Motor Vehicles and KES 750 for Motor Cycles.
New Digital Number Plates Kenya Deadline
The Kenyan government has given motor vehicle owners 18 months from 30th August 2022 to change to the new digital number plates.
Conclusion
The new digital number plates comply with the amended Traffic Act of 2016. It is illegal for anyone to manufacture or sell reflective registration plates or third-party registration plate licenses without the written consent of the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).
